Alexandra will be the place to catch some Twenty20 cricket action this summer.

The Otago Volts and Sparks will play three double headers over the course of a week at Alexandra’s Molyneux Park, the first Super Smash game hosted at Molyneux Park since 2020.

Otago Sparks head coach Craig Cumming is excited to be returning to Alexandra this summer.

“As cricketers and as fans, there is so much history playing and watching at Molyneux Park.

“The best weather, lovely ground, grass banks and an awesome local community that we are thankful for their support.

“There is no better place to be, and I know the Sparks cannot wait to play three games in Alexandra,” Craig said.

Otago Volts head coach Dion Ebrahim is also relishing the opportunity to head out into the regions this season.

“We know the team gets a lot of support from the area and there is always a fantastic family feel about playing cricket in Alexandra.

“The weather is hot, the locals friendly and the cricket is always entertaining,” Dion said.

The playing schedule is December 28 against Wellington, January 1 Auckland and January 3 Canterbury. Gates open half an hour prior to the game starting (the Sparks play first at 12.30pm, and the Volts at 4pm on each double header day).

Tickets are available from Otago Cricket’s website.

Both Otago teams start their Super Smash campaign at Wellington’s Basin Reserve, before taking on Canterbury on Boxing Day at Christchurch’s Hagley Oval. This summer a three-year broadcast deal with TVNZ begins and all 64 Super Smash games will be on free-to-air television.

Local cricket season is also well underway.

On Saturday November 11, the Molyneux Senior team won over Maniototo with batsman Charanjit Singh scoring 111 not out, of 49 balls, including 18 boundaries (13 sixes and five fours).
