Central Otago is accustomed to making the national news but Alexandra had announcers chuckling this week at something not to be proud of - the random items blocking our wastewater pump stations.

Central Otago District Council sent out a press release on Monday (July 24) with a plea to only flush the three Ps down toilets - poo, pee and (toilet) paper, as the system had been blocked twice in the past month by pairs of size six underpants. 

It got a laugh from Radio New Zealand National announcers on air, but water services operations leader Duncan McInnes said it was a serious matter.

“Although we can all have a laugh, it’s no joke,” he said. 

“Blockages cost time and ratepayer money – and they’re a hassle for everyone.”

The council’s wastewater operators say that 90 per cent of the blockages at the Eureka pump station are caused by clothing of some description, and more often than not, it is underwear. 

The wastewater pump stations can also get blocked by wipes, sanitary products, nappies, and fats and oils.

“It’s also a reminder to keep fats and oils out of your kitchen drain,” Duncan said.

 “They can also wreak havoc with the wastewater system. Help us maintain a reliable wastewater system and protect the environment from potential wastewater overflows.”
