Alexandra hockey teams show success Dunstan High School and Alexandra hockey teams won out in local competitions.

Dunstan High School (DHS) and Alexandra hockey teams have reaped success after local hockey competitions rounded up over the weekend.

Dunstan High School Sports Coordinator Sally Mullally says Dunstan High School had six teams in the Central Otago Hockey Association secondary school competition.

There are two grades to the competition, Sally says. DHS 1st XV won the A-Grade after a nail biting shootout 3-1 win in the final against Mt Aspiring College.

The DHS team went through the season unbeaten and also retained the “COVID Cup”.

“Following on from the success of our 1st XI there was an all Dunstan final for the top of the senior B reserve grade,” Sally says.

“The Dazzlers won 2-1 over the Destroyers. It was a great close game and there was some lovely hockey on display.”

DHS now has several students selected in the Central Otago U18 Girls, U15 Girls and U15 Boys representative teams.

Sally says the strength of local hockey lends itself to the argument of developing a new hockey surface for Alexandra.

“Hockey is strong at DHS despite the fact that unlike the other secondary schools, we do not have a suitable surface to practice on,” Sally says.

“The six DHS teams practice along with the primary school teams on the three tennis courts at Pioneer Park afterschool during daylight hours.

“From a personal point of view it would be great if we could get a suitable surface in Alexandra and I believe the sport would grow and develop even further.”

Alexandra Women won the Senior Women’s grade with the Men’s team finishing third in the Men’s competition.

DHS also won the Men’s Basketball final on Friday night, with the B team winning their grade and the girls A team also being in the womens A-Grade final.
