Brandon Gaw won the Alexandra Golf Club Senior Club Championship for the fourth year in a row in a tough match at Alexandra Golf Club last weekend.
The 29-year-old says the run to the final was difficult and despite a good start, had a few nerve-wracking moments.
“It went well in the end and turned out to be a tense match,” Brandon explains.
“Got off to a steady start, Toddy (opponent, Paul Anderson) got off to a really fast start and we both finished the front 9 under par.
“Kept it steady through the front 9 in the afternoon, I was 3 up with 9 to play and felt pretty comfortable.”
The two golfers squared up against each other for the same trophy last year.
Brandon says he made a couple of loose swings on holes 10 and 11 and lost a bit of momentum, which allowed Paul Anderson to gain ground.
“Toddy played well coming home, he really put the pressure on when I wasn’t playing well,” he explains.
“Toddy played awesome, probably the best golf I’ve seen him play.
“He was competitive all day, a pretty exciting match when it goes all the way to the 36th hole.
“I managed to birdie the two par 5s down the stretch which in the end won me the match.”
Four club championships in a row means Brandon has etched his name on the club’s boards, with golfers now looking to supplant him.
A golfer who says he enjoys the game most for its mental challenge, he now has a target on his back.
“I don’t think (four in a row) has been done before or for a very long time anyway,” Brandon says. “I don’t really have a secret, I just try and make sure I have less shots than the rest of the competition.”
Other winners on the day included Quentin McLean (Intermediate Champion), Craig Sinclair (Junior Champion) and Connor Bruce (Junior B Champion).
