Wānaka Stone:Quarry Worker - Poolburn

Wānaka Stone Poolburn

Listed: 28 Oct 2025

We're looking for a full-time person to join our small team at Poolburn Quarry in the Ida Valley.

We are recruiting for a full-time (42.5 hours per week), permanent Quarry Worker. Our business is expanding with the addition of a new guillotine and we're looking for a fourth person to join the team.

Rate of pay will be confirmed depending on skills and experience, but a minimum of $30.00 per hour for someone with no experience.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Our quarry workers operate the guillotine and cut, trim, and shape stone for use in the stonemasonry industry.
  • They operate machinery such as the loader, conveyor, and generator.
  • They carry out pre-start checks on the digger and use it to lift bags of rock.
  • Our quarry manager is responsible for the more complex work.
  • We look for people who are used to working outdoors and are already fit and ready to start a physical job.
  • Experience operating machinery would be an advantage.
  • General mechanical aptitude is a must (by that we mean someone who could start a water pump, do an oil change, or hear when a motor is under strain).
  • You must be able to learn quickly, and have a practical approach to problem solving.

This role could suit someone who has worked as a labourer in farming, construction, or similar. There is the potential to turn this job into a career since we will support quarry apprenticeship training for the right person.

Wages and benefits:

  • Wages that are reviewed at least every 12 months.
  • Guaranteed hours: 30 hours per week guaranteed (even if the quarry isn’t operating), but we normally work between 40 and 45 hours per week.
  • Work/life balance: We understand that life sometimes has to take priority over work, and we approach this with compassion.
  • Free staff transport from Alexandra.
  • We offer a wellbeing allowance of up to $100 per person per month to be spent on things like physio, massage, counselling, dentistry, gym membership, etc.
  • Free access to an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) that includes support for mental health, nutrition, financial planning, and more. This is also available to family members who live with you.

Attitude is everything – we need someone who will do their share of the work and contribute to our culture of safety and inclusion.

Because we take safety seriously, successful applicants will need to pass a pre-employment medical, drug test, and police check before starting work with us.

You must have a full driving licence and already be living in New Zealand to be considered for this role.

Last year we received special recognition for how we operate as a company, including how we treat employees. Come and find out what working for Wānaka Stone is like!
