Role Overview

We’re seeking a reporter to create positive, community-first content in written, visual, and audio formats. Flexible work hours - full time or part time option.

Key Responsibilities

Community driven reporting:

  • Build relationships with local businesses, groups, and residents to uncover diverse story angles.
  • Attend events, and gatherings across Central Otago.
  • Write, edit, and publish news briefs, human interest features, and event recaps.

Community support & engagement:

  • Guide residents, businesses, and event organisers on submitting content (What’s On, Jobs, Public notices, B2B).
  • Monitor engagement metrics (page views, newsletter opens, social shares) to inform future story ideas.

What we’re looking for

Local passion & growth mindset:

  • You live in Central Otago, (preferrably Cromwell) and have a community first attitude.
  • You’re curious about local issues, and committed to hearing all voices, not pushing opinions.

Core skills & experience:

  • 2+ years in journalism, digital media, or community communications (internship or freelance counts).
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with an ability to balance facial reporting and engaging storytelling.
  • Comfortable using a CRM (HubSpot preferred), google workspace, social media, and basic SEO best practices.

Why you’ll love working here:

  • Local Impact: Shape how Central Otago sees itself, celebrating small town heroes, positive developments, and the vibrant local culture.
  • Tight knit team: Join passionate locals who live, work, and play across the region. Tap into deep local expertise every day.
  • Growth & balance: With room to step into a leadership role as we expand, you’ll enjoy flexible deadlines, reasonable workloads, and respect for your time.

How to Apply:

  • Email your CV and a short cover letter (300 words) with the subject line: Local Reporter - (your name)
  • Early applications are encouraged; we’ll review submissions on a rolling basis. Final date 20th June, 2025.
