The Crown Range lies between Queenstown and Wanaka. It is the highest main road in New Zealand, reaching an altitude of 1121 metres.
While the Crown Range Road is a shorter distance to travel between Queenstown and Wanaka, travel time is longer and the road is much more challenging than the usual route through Cromwell.
Great scenery, awesome summer evening ride but in winter the road is often covered in snow and ice. This can make for very difficult riding conditions. The road can be very busy with lots of campervans over the summer months. The Crown Range offers some tight zig-zags and fascinating views. This could be a slow ride if you are new to the road as you may want to stop for photos. The summit has a couple of good areas for pulling over. Unfortunately, these are on the right hand side of the road so cross the opposing lane with care – visitors coming towards you may be distracted by the views they are getting. At the summit you are 1121 metres above sea level. You will be able to see Frankton, part of Lake Wakatipu and Queenstown.
