Nevis Cemetery

Nevis Valley

According to the Gazette, the Nevis Cemetery was officially established on 5 July 1899, although the first burials were held in 1898. Located on the valley floor and may be at times inaccessible during winter, this very isolated cemetery is the burial place for early settlers and miners. Only a few headstones remain to indicate that this is a burial site. The last recorded burial was 1939, although there is a headstone that indicates that there was a burial in 1976.

In terms of ongoing maintenance, there are some local community members who kindly look after the grounds. Unfortunately all of the original records for this cemetery have been lost. Council has a limited amount of information about this cemetery in its Archives. If anyone knows where the original cemetery records may be please contact Council.

Thank you to Graeme Stewart, Ken and Ann Adie for assistance with records and research for this cemetery.
