The Hayes family, who hailed from England, set up their life in the remote Ida Valley in the late 1880s. Engineer and millwright, Ernest Hayes excelled at creating labour-saving devices for farmers and created the family business E. Hayes and Sons. Hayes became famous for their perfected chain grab wire strainer design in 1924 but they also turned out windmills, fence standards and gates, rabbit smokers, cattle stops, spinning jennies and more.
Discover Hayes, absorb the Hayes family’s can-do spirit, explore restored domestic dwellings and the historic workshop where early technology is suspended in time.
