It’s that time again, our regular riverbed surveys have identified that we need to remove gravel buildup from the Manuherekia River to keep water flowing freely, reduce the risk of flooding in the upper
reaches, and keep the river and surrounding areas safer and more enjoyable for everyone.
Extraction work in the lower reaches and around Alexandra will be clearly visible and may cause some disruption.
We’ll have traffic and environmental management plans in place, including managing truck and vehicle movements and using street sweepers and water carts regularly to minimise dust buildup, particularly around site entry/exit points. We’re planning work near swimming holes for the cooler months in late Autumn, when we may limit access for safety.
The gravel we’re removing as part of our consent requirements for Roxburgh Dam operations will help raise productive horticultural and agricultural land in Earnscleugh and supply future civil works, supporting local industry.
