The NZ Merino Shears, held annually in Alexandra, highlights the merino wool industry, as well as the skills of shearing and wool handling.

Since 1972, the National Shearing Circuit has been a highly regarded competition showcasing top shearing talent. For the past 20 years, PGG Wrightson has been a key sponsor.

The competition consists of five rounds, starting in Alexandra with the fine wool section. The circuit then moves to Waimate for full wool hoggets, followed by the Corriedales round in Christchurch in November. On Waitangi Day, the event focuses on lambs in Rangitikei, and concludes in February in Pahiatua with second shears.

The top 12 shearers, based on points accumulated over the five rounds, compete in the final round in Masterton, just before the Golden Shears.
