Central Stories Book Launch: Tuapeka Chows

Sat 13 Dec 2025, 12:00 AM - 1:00 AM

21 Centennial Ave, Alexandra

Join us for a fascinating journey into Central Otago's Chinese gold mining heritage at the launch of "Tuapeka Chows," a compelling new book by local author Adrienne Shaw.

The Lawrence Chinese Camp was established in 1867 at the beginning of the gold rush and provided a home for numerous Chinese families seeking their fortunes in New Zealand.

Adrienne Shaw is a fifth-generation descendant of Chau Chu Taai (also known as Chow Tie) and Grace Kerr, who married and resided at the Lawrence Chinese Camp making this deeply personal narrative one written by someone with direct family connections to the stories she tells.

Shaw has written a new history documenting the camp and its descendants, proudly counting herself among them.

This historical narrative brings to light the experiences of early Chinese men and their families who helped shape Central Otago's rich multicultural heritage during the gold rush era.

Meet the author, discover the untold stories behind the pages, and get your copy signed!

This is a unique opportunity to connect with an important chapter of our region's history through the eyes of a descendant who has dedicated herself to preserving this heritage.
